Renner and Company presents successful Non-Profit Seminar (July 20, 2011)
More than 80 nonprofit professionals attended the Renner and Company Non-Profit Seminar Wednesday, July 20 at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites on First Street in Old Town to hear about important nonprofit topics.
Renner and Company senior Managers Karen Urcia and Catherine M. Pennington, CPA presented “IRS Focus on Compensation—What is the IRS looking at now?”, Robert J. Weil, Esq. from the Law Offices of Robert J. Weil spoke about “The Legal Audit”, Renner and Company’s Catherine M. Pennington, CPA, Senior Manager, and Andrew Young, Manager spoke about “Budgeting for Good Governance—Turn your budget into a projection” and “Budgeting for Changes to the Lease Accounting Rules”, Mel Whiteley, CPCU, RPLU, Vice President of AH&T Insurance spoke about “Nonprofit Risk Management” and Renner & Company Shareholder, Joan M. Renner, CPA and Manager Karen Johnson, MBA spoke about the “Nonprofit Scorecard—How do you measure up? The firm presents the Renner Nonprofit Seminar annually for members of nonprofit management, board members and friends.
Renner and Company named 2011 Small Business Philanthropist of the Year
May 2011. Renner and Company was named the 2011 Small Business Philanthropist of the Year at the 13th Annual Business Philanthropy Summit presented by Volunteer Alexandria. Renner and Company was honored for providing inspiration as a model of business integrated with community by injecting not just financial support to Alexandria organizations, but also time, energy, enthusiasm and expertise. Hundreds of volunteers attended the event that kicked off the 4th Annual Spring for Alexandria Community Service Day. Other honorees were Dominion Power as the 2011 Large Business Philanthropist of the Year, Kari Galloway, the Executive Director of Guest House as the 2011 Nonprofit Leader of the Year, and Lori and Nigel Morris as the 2011 Nonprofit Board Leaders of the Year.
Brandon Faux recently passed the CPA Exam, an important professional achievement. Mr. Faux is a graduate of Radford University in Radford, Virginia is in his second year of public accounting. Brandon serves on many nonprofit audit engagements and is a valued member of our firm. Congratulations, Brandon.

Renner and Company Senior Managers, Rima Ghanem, CPA and Karen Urcia presented “The Health Care Act – 10 ways it will affect nonprofits”, Robert J. Weil, Esq. from the Law Offices of Robert J. Weil spoke about vendor contracts “Who Can I Blame When Things Go Wrong”, and Renner and Company Shareholder, Joan M. Renner, CPA spoke about “Acing Your Audit – the ABCs of a positive audit.” The firm periodically presents programs on important accounting, audit and tax issues for our clients and friends.
Renner and Company Accountant, Karen Tieu, passes Uniform CPA Exam (July 2010)
Karen Tieu recently passed the CPA Exam, an important professional achievement. Ms. Tieu is a graduate of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia and has more than two years experience in public accounting. Karen provides accounting services to trade associations and other nonprofit organizations and also provides tax services to individuals and closely held businesses. Karen is an Enrolled Agent.
